What is Academic Decathlon?!?
Academic Decathlon is the most prestigious nation-wide
academic competition held at the high school level. Students compete in diverse and exciting topics. The focus of the
subjects varies annually according to a theme. This year's theme is "Latin America and Evolution."
A common misconception about Academic Decathlon is that decathletes must spend hours memorizing facts. In reality, the
type of learning that that takes place in decathlon is centered around discussions, lively debates, and peer tutoring. In
short, decathletes learn by exploring some of the most explosive issues in the world today.

The Objectives
SUPER QUIZ: Was your granddaddy a monkey? Are The Flinstones, with their depiction of dinosaurs living alongside humans, historically
accurate? Is evolution a theory or a fact? What does the Kansas state board of education have to do with any of this? Super
Quiz this year is centered on the topic of evolutionary biology.
ART & MUSIC: In Decathlon, students get a taste of the world's greatest works of art and music. In line with our theme
we will be exploring Latin America art and music. Additionally, students will develop an understanding of intellectual movements
and the artists responsible for creating the pieces. If you don't have a prior experience with the arts, there's no need to
fear, because Decathlon is geared towards students of all backgrounds.
SOCIAL SCIENCE: Ancient civilizations, Spanish conquest, and civil war: what could be more exciting than the history of
Latin America? The social Science curriculum will cover the history of Mexico.
LANGUAGE & LITERATURE: Studying literature in decathlon offers students a head-start on the type of analysis that
takes place in an AP or college English class. This year we will read and discuss "Bless Me Ultima" by Adolfo Anaya,
train in critical reading, and analyze Latin America poetry and essays.
MATH: Do you love math? Do you detest math? It doesn't matter! We have students at all levels of mathematics ready to
peer learn and teach. the mathematics test consist of topics in fields of general math, algebra, geomety, trigonometry , and
differential calculus.
ECONOMICS: Economics focuses on the fundamentals of economics, the general topics in microeconomics and macroeconomics,
and international trade/global economic development. And additional case study is focused on the economics of Latin America.
Since economics is a graduation and general education requirement, Decathlon guarantees you will be ready to overtake the
competition later. In fact, one of our former Decathlete is a now an economist!

The Subjectives
SPEECH/ESSAY/INTERVIEW: These three skills are essential to communicating ideas both in decathlon and in life. Most students
walk into Decathlon with little or no experience in these subjects and walk out as champions. Year after year, our Decathletes
place first in these events.
